Why Olivia Munn should still be Psylocke in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Bring back Olivia Munn so she can really be Psylocke when the X-Men show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

X-Men: Apocalypse might just be the movie that doomed the X-Men franchise. It was far from the follow-up to Days of Future Past we hoped it would be and failed in many ways. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy were their normal amazing selves, but they were one of the few bright spots in the film.

Then there was Olivia Munn, who portrayed Psylocke. She didn’t have a good or bad outing; not because of her acting – this had nothing to do with her. It did, however, have everything to do with the people in charge with what her character did in the project.

Olivia Munn is a nerd. She loves and is knowledgeable about video games, comic books, and other nerdy things. It’s rare that you get an actor who knows and loves the source material. She took the role so seriously that she made time to learn how to use a sword with skill – something that not all actors would be expected to take the time to do. But she enjoyed the opportunity to be part of a genre she loved and it showed.

That’s why it’s disappointing that she didn’t get to be more than what we saw. The commercials and trailers led us to believe that she was going to have a major part in X-Men: Apocalypse. Sure, she was important to the story, playing one of Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen – a crucial part of Apocalypse’s story. Yet, it wasn’t memorable. It was a waste of both Psylocke and Olivia Munn.

You’re thinking, “If she didn’t do much, how can you say that she’ll be good?” Easy, Let’s look at the part where she did shine.

During the final fight scene, Munn looked positively great as Psylocke. Her fight with Beast was one of the best parts of the movie, and we really should have gotten more of that throughout. The sword and the whip looked incredible, and there’s no reason that we shouldn’t have seen her fight more and use more different and creative psionic weapons. Imagine if she used an ax? Or a shield while blocking Cyclops’ optic blast?

Furthermore. in the few speaking moments she had, Munn delivered her lines perfectly. She was very confident, and that confidence is needed in a role such as this. So there’s no doubt she would have continued this pattern given the opportunity. It’s befuddling that they just didn’t use her.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

The X-Men property is now “back home” with Marvel Studios. With the exception of a few characters, most fans would be happy with new actors taking on the roles as their favorite X-Men characters. However, Olivia Munn should be allowed to continue playing Psylocke – especially since we’re probably getting an X-Force with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.

Adding Munn opens up a plethora of jokes for Deadpool about her in X-Men: Apocalypse. Jokes she could get and reciprocate with something like, “I don’t want to talk about that.” Plus, we’d get to see her in an R-rated movie = and that is somewhere the character would definitely shine.

Olivia Munn wasn’t given a fair shot with 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. The world may not be fair, but this was a travesty. This is like Sophie Turner in Dark Phoenix; shining in an otherwise poor film.

Hopefully Munn will get another chance to portray Psylocke further down the road – she definitely deserves that chance.
