There have been a lot of questions about that Skrull reveal in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far from Home. We saw Nick Fury on the S.W.O.R.D space station, but where was the real Maria Hill?

Now, this might seem like an odd thought, but is Maria Hill an actual person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The reason why we ask is because of how the Talos and Soren reveal played out in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far from Home.

During said post-credit scene, we learn that Peter wasn’t actually talking to the real Fury and Hill during his mission in Europe during his school vacation and it was Fury’s Skrull friends disguised as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D and his second-in-command.

A theory has popped up detailing that Maria Hill might not actually be a real person, but we know she certainly is and here’s why we think that.

Talos Explains The Dynamics Of Skrull Shapeshifting

In Captain Marvel, Talos explains to Fury, Maria Rambeau and Carol Danvers how the Skrull shapeshifting ability works. According to him, a Skrull has to see what their target looks like before taking on their form.

Fair enough, right? Well, for Soren to take on the form of Maria Hill, she would have to actually see Hill. Now, if Hill wasn’t a real person, she wouldn’t have been able to take on that persona and therefore, she would not have appeared in the Spider-Man: Far from Home post-credit scene.

“Nick.”

Another point that Captain Marvel addresses is that Fury has always been known by his last name and never by anything else. Though, Hill refers to him as Nick in every film she has appeared with him in. While it’s not actually explained, it’s possible that only she is allowed to address him as such, though the reasoning behind this is could be as simple as Fury trusting Hill more than anyone else.

Also, he and Hill would have to be fairly close for this to occur. Soren had adopted all of Maria’s mannerisms in order to take on her persona, though she did slip up when she called her husband (as Fury) out for having doubts about Mysterio. Though, Happy didn’t seem to pick up on this when he met up with them. However, Hogan might not have known Fury and Hill that well to notice that something was off with them.

Loyalty

If there’s one thing Fury requires it’s loyalty. He mentions in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that the last time he trusted anyone, he lost an eye. We know from Captain Marvel that Goose scratched him across the face with her claws. Turns out the Flecken kitty doesn’t like being cooed over. Anyway, if the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D didn’t trust anyone, why did he trust Hill to be his second-in-command? We can even go a step further and question why he would ask two Skrulls he only met once in the ’90s to go undercover for him?

Was there something else going on with S.H.I.E.L.D other than H.Y.D.R.A’s takeover that he knew and only trusted Hill to know? Was this why she wasn’t actually present during the mission in Europe?

Where Was Hill During Spider-Man: Far From Home?

One thing we need to question is where Hill was eight months after Tony Stark’s death. As far as we know, her appearance at Iron Man’s funeral was actually her and not Soren. We learn in the post-credit scene of Far from Home that, during the whole Mysterio crisis in Europe, Fury was on the S.W.O.R.D space station… but Maria wasn’t with him.

The post-credit scene doesn’t even reference her. So, where could she be? If we had to guess, she might have been on a secret mission for Fury and S.W.O.R.D. Since S.H.I.E.L.D is now obsolete due its links with H.Y.D.R.A, it’s perfectly understandable as to why Fury wouldn’t want his new organization to be associated to the old corrupt one. Perhaps, she was recruited by the FBI and is on an assignment with Jimmy Woo.

So far, there’s been no confirmation that Hill is associated with S.W.O.R.D or that the space station is what we assume it is. It’s always fun to speculate but only time will tell where Maria is and whether Fury’s new pet project is S.W.O.R.D.

Another question we need to ask ourselves is if it’s really Hill and by extension, Fury in Mexico at the beginning of Far from Home. Well, we have a No, it wasn’t. According to MCU Fandom page, Skirmish in Ixtenco, when this event occurred it was actually Talos and Soren, not their human counterparts as both were off-world.

Conclusion – Is Maria Hill A Real Person In The MCU?

Taking all of that into account, we have every belief that Maria Hill is indeed very real. It would’ve been impossible for The Skrulls to keep up appearances for a long period of time so, yes, Fury and Hill would’ve been themselves during The Avengers and so forth.
