Wonder Woman 1984: 5 DC films to watch while you wait for its release
1. Wonder Woman
The number one movie on the list is, of course, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman. The third installment of the DCEU franchise, it stands as one of the best comic book movies over the last decade.
Wonder Woman saw Gal Gadot reprise her after being cast in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Joining the cast was a slew of great talent, including Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, and Elena Anaya.
This wasn’t your typical superhero film as Jenkins brought Allan Heinberg’s writing to life in a period piece set in the 1910s with the Amazonian Princess caught in the middle of World War I. After saving Steve Trevor (Pine), Diana leaves her home in the hopes of stopping the man responsible for the hatred in the world: The God of War, Ares. Along the way, she learns what it’s like to be among the people and a hero is born.
Wonder Woman did more than just reassure fans that the DCEU was here to stay. Patty Jenkins did an amazing job as the first woman to direct a superhero film and only the third to direct a film budgeted at $100 million. The 2017 critically-acclaimed film pioneered the growing demand for female directors and comic book movies with a female lead – and it’s easy to see why.
