Black Widow’s new release date shifts every future MCU film
By Scott Brown
After being pulled from the release schedule, Disney has announced a new release date for Black Widow – and every single MCU movie that follows it.
Amidst the month of March, many films were pulled from the release schedule due to public safety concerns and theater closures around the world.
Among those films were Black Widow and The New Mutants, which were supposed to open on May 1, 2020 and April 3, 2020 (a.k.a. the date of publishing for this article) respectively. Well, we now have confirmation of a new release date for Black Widow which will now open on November 6, 2020, taking the date that was originally held by The Eternals.
With Black Widow now taking the spot of The Eternals, this has subsequently pushed back the releases of every Marvel film that was set to follow Black Widow. Because of that shift, here are all the release dates that Marvel has shifted as of now: The Eternals will open on February 12, 2020, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings on May 7, 2021, Doctor Strange 2 on November 5, 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder on February 18, 2022. Black Panther 2 is still set on its original release date of May 6, 2022, while Captain Marvel 2 has been revealed to have a release date of July 8, 2022.

These release date changes seem to be the best-case scenario as of right now for the constantly shifting theater landscape as of the moment and these changes will allow audiences to see the films as they were meant to be seen, on the big screen.
Some of these date changes may even be beneficial for some of the productions of these films. Shang-Chi had its production delayed after director Destin Daniel Cretton had been instructed to self-isolate while in Australia. While, unrelated to the COVID-19 virus, Doctor Strange 2 had a director change recently after Scott Derrickson left the film and Sam Raimi came on board. Other projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that have suffered delays in production during this time include the shows WandaVision and Loki.
Among all the date changes to the MCU that have just been announced, several other films on Disney’s slate have gotten new release dates. Mulan, originally going to be release on March 27, 2020, now has a tentative release date of July 24, 2020. The Dwayne Johnson-Emily Blunt film Jungle Cruise has been pushed back roughly a year to July 20, 2021 and Indiana Jones 5, which was looking at a summer 2021 release date, has set a date on July 29, 2022.
Artemis Fowl, which was set to open theatrically on May 29, 2020, is set to premiere on Disney Plus, the first of these films to forgo its theatrical release window entirely. This bodes well for The New Mutants as it has been delayed so many times at this point that it just needs to be put out of its misery and released, and Disney Plus or Hulu would be the right place for Disney to do so.
