With the X-Men rumored to eventually appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would Hugh Jackman consider reprising his role as Wolverine?

Hugh Jackman has re-confirmed that the character of Wolverine is behind him. After picking up the adamantium claws for the first time in the 2000 film, X-Men, Jackman bid farewell to Wolverine in the 2017 swansong Logan. Now that the Disney-Fox acquisition has finally come through and the X-Men are expected to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would Jackman like to play the iconic character again?

Unfortunately for fans, Jackman will stick by his decision to ‘leave the party’. Speaking to The Daily Beast, he revealed that if the merger between X-Men copyright holders Fox and the MCU owners Disney had taken place seven years ago, he would have jumped at the chance to join the franchise, but for now he remains steadfast in his decision to hang up the claws.

That doesn’t mean Jackman doesn’t hope to see Wolverine rise again. If the X-Men do enter the MCU as anticipated, Jackman believes the studio will re-cast the character. As reported by IGN, Jackman also said in the aforementioned interview:

"“Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to…”"

It’s hard to imagine anyone else stepping into the massive boots of Jackman. He’s the rare X-Men character to appear in almost every single X-Men film and spin-off over the course of 17 years. The Australian actor made a splash as the mutant anti-hero in the first live-action portrayal of Wolverine and has become veritably synonymous with the character.

The trouble with Wolverine, however, is that there’s a risk of overusing the character. Though Wolverine wasn’t even in the first class of X-Men in the comics, he became immensely popular. Yet, despite being a long-time favorite for many comic book readers, some fans have criticized Marvel for turning Wolverine into a cash-grab.

Since we’ve had the pleasure of seeing the character for close to two decades on the big screen, perhaps Marvel Studios would be smart enough to give Wolverine a break for a while. The X-Men universe is full of other incredibly diverse characters who deserve a chance in the spotlight.
