Sony has officially named their own shared Spider-Man-related universe and boy it’s a mouthful…

These days, shared universes are all the rage when it comes to entertaining moviegoers. This serialized format and expansion of various media franchises appears to be here to stay. And following in the footsteps of Marvel Studios’ MCU and Warner Bros.’ DCEU is Sony’s separate Marvel Universe.

IGN has revealed that Sony has declared the official name of the shared universe they have built around Spider-Man.

In a tweet that advertised all of the live-action Spider-Man films from Tobey Maguire to Tom Holland, the film saga was billed as the Spider-Man Universe of Characters. However, following further clarification from IGN, that is not the official name of the wider Marvel franchise Sony has been building (although it rolls off the tongue a little smoother than the official name). No, Sony’s shared Spider-verse, if you will, is officially titled: the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or SPUMC for short).

More from Marvel

From a PR standpoint, it makes sense. Sony wants to create brand synergy by combining the IP with the brand name.

Think of it this way: Spidey ain’t getting sold back to Disney any time soon. While Spidey is able to stay in the MCU a little while longer (for at least two more projects) before the renewal of the sharing arrangement, other Spidey-related characters will not be able to cross over with the franchise at this point in time.

The SPUMC that kicked off with Venom has begun expanding the larger universe. While Morbius (starring Jared Leto) is the frontrunner for an early spring 2021 release, Tom Hardy is reprising his role of an investigative journalist–turned–symbiotic-enhanced anti-hero, Eddie Brock (aka Venom) in sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage – where he will be against Shriek played by Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady – a crazed serial killer soon to become the fused alien being Carnage.
