X-Men: The 20 best characters of the last decade
By Mark Lynch
20. Quentin Quire
Quentin Quire used to be a villain back in New X-Men. He spent his earlier years trying to be an anarchist leader of mutants and ended up doing more harm than good. After the Schism of the X-Men, Wolverine took him to the school he opened up. It looked like Quentin was going to be another villain looking to destroy the X-Men from within, so it was a good surprise to find out we were wrong.
In a short amount of time, Quentin became a more well-rounded character. He remained a rebellious and narcissistic jerk with funny things on his shirt. Qualities that should make us hate him. On paper, he sounds like an annoying antagonist. All of this, however, ends up becoming a fun aspect of his personality – especially when he turned into a caring hero who helped save the X-Men on a few occasions.
Back in 2003, if you’d told this writer Quentin Quire was going to make this list, he would have laughed at you. However, here he is.
Everything he did while attending Jean Grey’s School for Gifted Youngsters made him someone to look forward to. Now, on Krakoa, he’s back to annoying Wolverine and being insufferable. Again, this shouldn’t work. Thankfully, it does.
It’ll be fun to see what’s up next for him in the pages of X-Force. Hopefully he remains on the side of good. Like Juggernaut, this works better.
