How The Batman will be darker than its predecessors
We all know that Batman likes his darkness, so too does director Matt Reeves, it’s a match made in heaven, and we can’t wait.
Things aren’t going as planned for any movie, and that includes The Batman. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s originally-planned July release date was pushed back to October 2021. Still, the excitement for Matt Reeves’ Batman hasn’t simmered, for good reason.
Despite the covert nature that exists with The Batman, there are some things to get excited about. The intriguing cast is one of them; leading the way is Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Selena Kyle, and Jeffrey Wright who’ll play Commissioner Gordon.
This is the first shot at a Batman solo film in the DCEU since The Dark Knight was introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, that was Ben Affleck’s version, whom we last saw in Justice League. It feels like such a long time ago. That was a very different Batman with differing expectations. While we’ll never know what that Batman would have been, this Batman promises to paint The Dark Knight in a light we haven’t seen in his cinematic history.
Some behind the scene photos gave us a small taste of what to expect. Now, so has Alfred actor Andy Serkis. During his interview with LADbible, Serkis revealed that this Batman will not only focus on the relationship between Alfred and Bruce, it’s going to be a little darker. Those who followed Reeves’ work understand what he brings in terms of darkness.

In 2010, Reeves wrote and directed the critically acclaimed horror remake Let Me In. He continued to explore his dark side with the War of the Planet of the Apes. With Batman, rumors suggest that Reeves extrapolated from Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale’s 13 issue comic arc, The Long Halloween.
Long Halloween is a noir-inspired story that does a couple of things. For one, it forced Batman into detective mode as he struggles to find the murdering vigilante known as the Holiday Killer. Additionally, it’s one of the more twisted arcs in the comics that also happens to give birth to Two-Face. The arc was arguably the best Batman story in all of DC Comics, so to have Reeves potentially bringing aspects of it to life on the big screen in darkly fashion is exciting.
It also helps that an amazing cast of baddies will bring that darkness to light. Paul Dano will star as Riddler, Collin Ferrell as Penguin, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. How these Batman rogues fit into this film remains a mystery. However, one can assume each of them are a suspect. It’s probably safe to assume that Selina Kyle is also on that list.
We are a long way from getting the Batman back into theaters, but the hype is real. And this latest tidbit of information only fuels the fire. The Batman hits theaters Oct. 1, 2021.
