Mark your calendars! The Fox/Disney X-Men spin-off film, New Mutants, is set to release in theaters in August 2020.

Ah, New Mutants, we’ve been on such a ride with you, and most of us haven’t even seen you yet. The film has epitomized the phrase ‘production hell’ after teasing fans with a release date for years. Now, Fox and Disney promise that the film is back!

The studio behind the X-Men film stated on Twitter that the film will release in theaters on August 28, 2020. But can we get excited yet?

Expectations were high for this Josh Boone-directed film as it veered away from the current crop of characters who have been the main focus of Fox’s X-Men films since 1999. Starring Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar and Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, the film looks to be a clear tonal and visual shift from the other franchise films. Trailers and images hinted at a horror vibe set in an asylum.

More recent promotional photos gave audiences a glimpse of the team fighting the Demon Bear, one of the more notable villains in the team’s comic book history.

The New Mutants film has been delayed for so many times, it’s practically become an urban legend in itself. It’s been through re-shoots, re-writes and re-edits, but recently the creators revealed the screen test audiences reacted positively to the final product.

August 2020 is the film’s fifth release date, but one wonders if the decision to push a theatrical release is a wise one. The world is still in the grips of a global pandemic, and while some countries have tentatively reopened its doors, we are unsure of how many people are willing to flock to an enclosed theatre. Many speculated that New Mutants would instead find a new home on the live streaming services owned by Disney – Disney Plus or Hulu. Since that doesn’t appear to be the case, let’s hope the film finally sees the light of day.
