David Ayer reveals that his cut of Suicide Squad may always be a rumor
Bright director, David Ayer, has responded to a social-media campaign to release ‘The Ayer Cut’ of his film Suicide Squad.
This August, it will be almost four years since Suicide Squad was released. The film, written and directed by David Ayer, was met with negative reviews from critics and mixed reception from audiences. However, when compared to the theatrical cut of 2017 DCEU film Justice League, it fared a lot better.
Since the reveal that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is set to drop exclusively on the streaming service HBO Max in 2021, fans of Suicide Squad have responded by attempting to kick off their own campaign for Ayer’s version of the film to receive similar treatment – with many of them using the hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut on social media.
The filmmaker directly responded to the outpouring of fan love, replying to a fan of Twitter who asked him if it would ever see the light of day. He tweeted:
"“It is simply not my call or my IP. I love WB – it’s always been my ‘home studio’ I fully respect and support the incredible path the DCU is taking under their stewardship.”"
Of course, the initial cut of Suicide Squad received additional filming in 2016 after principal photography wrapped in August 2015.
For those who were not aware of the behind-the-scenes meddling, Ayer was tasked in writing a screenplay of the ensemble supervillain film within six weeks before filming began. At some point down the line, there were scenes left on the cutting room floor. An extended cut, which contained at least 13 minutes, was later released on home media.
While fans had long championed Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League, Ayer wasn’t so sure that his cut of Suicide Squad was a certainty, adding:
"“My cut of Suicide Squad may always be just a rumor. And that’s just fine.”"
The director previously addressed his original ending for the 2016 movie, which involved El Diablo’s survival and Harley Quinn and Deadshot “hook[ing] up as a couple”. But that ultimately “changed during reshoots.”
A follow-up to the collective supervillain film, The Suicide Squad, is more of a soft reboot. It features an all-star cast of Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, John Cena, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee and several more.
James Gunn is writing the screenplay and directing the picture. Charles Roven, Michael De Luca, Peter Safran and Dan Lin will produce for Atlas Entertainment and The Safran Company under the DC Films banner while Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute. Task Force X will meet their “hit” in theaters August 21, 2021.
