Wonder Woman 1984 could be the first wide release to hit theaters since March
By Josh Baggins
If most movie theaters do not open by July, there is a possibility that Wonder Woman 1984 could be the face of cinematic re-openings.
In a world where the coronavirus never swept across the globe, superhero movie fans would have seen The New Mutants, Black Widow, and Wonder Woman 1984 in cinemas by the end of this month. When movie theaters were forced to close down, however, all of their scheduled releases were pushed to a later date this year, and now, some of those dates are approaching.
It turns out that the superhero movie that would have come out latest of the three is actually first in line amid the rescheduling. Wonder Woman 1984 will open on August 14th if enough theaters are up and running. Even if many states have started to get back to business as usual, large urban cities are key locations for the film industry’s revenue, so new movies can’t hit theaters until those major cities are operating.
Many municipalities have yet to offer specific updates about movie theaters, however the mayor of San Francisco plans to have cinemas re-open in mid-August. The bad news is that there are two wide releases scheduled for July – Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Disney’s live-action Mulan. The latter was already pushed back because of coronavirus shutdowns. We are still waiting to see what will happen with New York City and Los Angeles. Entertainment venues are a part of New York’s phase four of re-opening and the earliest that phase would launch is July.
But what will happen if New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco all do not open theaters in time for the July releases? Tenet and Mulan may have to reshuffle and that could potentially cause a ripple effect for August releases like Wonder Woman 1984 and The New Mutants.
Tenet and Wonder Woman are both distributed by Warner Brothers, while Mulan and New Mutants are both in the hands of Disney, so if theaters aren’t ready in July for the former pair of movies, their respective studios may bump the August releases to make way for them.

Another option could be that the July releases hop to the end of the year, making the holiday movie season even more crowded. If Tenet and Mulan do get kicked out of summer entirely, Wonder Woman 1984 would be the first new blockbuster movie released in theaters post-coronavirus closures. Could an event movie get any more eventful?
We know that San Francisco is eyeing the ides of August, and the Amazonian princess was already planning to drop in at that time anyway, so Wonder Woman 1984 could legitimately be the first movie that theater-goers venture out for in many months.
We shall find out the fate of these films’ release dates in the coming weeks. Would you be happy to see Wonder Woman 1984 become the movie that brings film fans back to movie theaters? Let us know in the comments below.
