Luke Cage season 2 ended with a very Daredevil vibe and here’s why
By Mark Lynch
How the ending of Luke Cage season 2 was right out of the pages of Daredevil.
Season 2 of Luke Cage ended in an extremely disappointing way. The series finale of the Netflix/Marvel TV series saw Luke became the Kingpin of Harlem. He became everything he protected his community from. Anything that was going down in Harlem had to go through him. If he found out, there was going to be a price. This made him no different than Cottonmouth.
Luke felt like he was doing the right thing for his city. In actuality, a lot of his friends, peers, and community members were looking at him with shame. But Luke was okay with this – if being shunned kept Harlem safe he would sleep easy.
Personally, this was a terrible ending. It tarnished Luke Cage’s personality. He was supposed to find a way to rise above – not become what he shed blood, sweat, and tears fighting against.

To be fair, we don’t know what would have happened in season 3? Well, we can actually make an educated guess. All you have to do is check out Brian Michael Bendis’ run of Daredevil.
During Daredevil issue No. 50, Daredevil and Wilson Fisk had a fight for the ages. Fisk was trying to kill his rival once and for all. Matt Murdock, however, was on the fence. Was killing Wilson Fisk the right thing to do? He caused more pain than some villains with powers. Maybe it was time. In the end, Daredevil won. He beat Fisk unconscious.
After the beating, Daredevil crashed a car into the side of a bar full of criminals with Fisk knocked-out on the hood. Daredevil threatened everyone there saying leave, change your lives, or end up like Fisk. He finished by ripping his mask off and saying, “I am not protecting this city any more. I’m running it” declaring himself the Kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen.
How this connects to the ending of Luke Cage season 2
Matt Murdock thought this was a good idea. He assumed that being the scary and intimidating Daredevil at the top of the mountain meant that he was doing the right thing for Hell’s Kitchen. He spent the next few weeks cleaning up Hell’s Kitchen. Beating down every criminal who didn’t take him seriously. After that, Matt didn’t need to put the Daredevil uniform on again. He effectively cleaned up the city. However, at what cost?
Luke Cage was the first person to speak out on what was going on. Then, Luke, Reed Richards, Peter Parker, and Dr. Strange met in a park to talk to him. They wanted him to stop being the new Kingpin. Matt wasn’t in a place to listen. Instead, he angrily told them that they should follow suit. Become the heads of their respective cities like he was. Matt left angry that they even approached him. Eventually, with the help of his friends, things went back to normal.
This may be what could have happened to Luke Cage in season 3. Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Misty Knight, and Danny Rand could have ended up confronting Luke about what he was doing. It probably would have ended up in a fight – one that would have showcased Luke’s true power. In the end, Luke would have come to his senses.
If this were the case, it would have been interesting to see the show switch the positions between Luke and Matt -especially since keeping it like the source material made more sense. Too bad we’ll never know what could’ve been. We do know this, however: It could have been great.
