What does Peggy Carter’s boyfriend think of her MCU ending?
By Monita Mohan
Enver Gjokaj played Peggy Carter’s love interest on Agent Carter. Here’s what he thinks of her MCU ending.
Avengers: Endgame was divisive for many reasons, including its ending. Steve Rogers/ Captain America (Chris Evans) returned the Infinity Stones to their respective timelines and chose to settle down in the past with the love of his life, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
Some viewers were upset by Steve’s actions, because in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Peggy was happily married. An now, Enver Gjokaj, who starred in the short-lived MCU spin-off Agent Carter, weighed in on the controversial ending.
Gjokaj’s Agent Daniel Sousa was a war veteran with a soft spot for Peggy when they worked together in the SSR. The pair were allies on the two seasons of the MCU show, though Sousa was obviously smitten by Peggy.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gjokaj said that Sousa would not have begrudged Steve sweeping Peggy off her feet again because Peggy was still in love with Steve after his ‘death’. According to the actor, Sousa loved Peggy despite knowing he would always be in ‘second place’ to Steve Rogers.
"“To be honest, it’s so clear in the writing and it’s so clear in the way Hayley plays it that [Steve] was never gonna be replaced… I think that was the beautiful tragedy of his attraction to her is that he knew that and he wanted to be with her anyway. He knew he was always going to be second place, and I think that’s a little heartbreaking about Sousa.”"
Where did we leave Agent Sousa in the MCU?
When last we saw Sousa, he and Peggy had finally confessed their feelings for each other and seemed to be proceeding with starting a relationship. However, since Agent Carter was prematurely cancelled, fans were left wondering if Sousa remained in Peggy’s life and was the mysterious man she had been married to as seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Gjokaj makes a valid point about Atwell playing Peggy on Agent Carter as someone who hadn’t overcome her feelings for Steve Rogers. Peggy kept a photo of skinny-Steve with her at all times, proving that she liked the man rather than the superhero.
While fans will never stop debating whether Steve’s MCU ending was selfish or not, the argument can be made that Steve returning to Peggy in an alternative timeline was probably the happiest outcome for her character as well.
Gjokaj’s Agent Sousa returns as a guest star in the final season of MCU show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. currently airing weekly.
