Black Canary to make her novel debut in YA book Breaking Silence
DC Comics’ Black Canary will be debuting in a YA novel Breaking Silence from the author Alexandra Monir.
As revealed by Deadline, Alexandra Monir will be bringing DC Comics’ own Black Canary to the pages of a YA novel for the very first time later this year.
Black Canary: Breaking Silence will mark the character’s first ever novel. It will also serve as the fifth novel within the DC Icons banner after Wonder Woman: Warbringer, Batman: Nightwalker, Catwoman: Soulstealer and Superman: Dawnbreaker. These series of novels center on adolescent versions of DC’s heroes before they became who the superheroes they are destined to be.
Monir’s Black Canary: Breaking Silence will be published by Random House and it is set to drop on December 29. The forthcoming story is set during the not-too-distant future of Gotham City where the city is under the grip of the Court of Owls. In this world, women are denied the right to work and make music. A seven-year-old Dinah Lance hears what she was not meant to hear – a girl singing.
A decade later and a teenage Dinah Lance has manifested the ability to emit highly enhanced screams of high amplitude – becoming the legendary Black Canary. Along the way, she meets fellow student, Oliver Queen, and is caught between allowing her father’s shield of protection and encouraging other women to stand against the Court of Owls.

As Deadline also revealed, the novel will feature original song lyrics written by Monir (as she has a considerable music background). Frequently accompanying music into her literary works, her debut novel, Timeless, was released in 2011, and she dropped The Timeless EP via by Mailboat Records in 2013.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, Black Canary made her first appearance in Flash Comics No.86 in 1947 and became a primary love interest for the superhero Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) and eventually went on to become a member of the Justice League.
Though she only recently made her cinematic debut in Birds of Prey (And The Fatabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Black Canary has a long and fruitful history on television. Batwoman‘s Rachel Skarsten played a younger version of the character (named Dinah Redmond) in the short-lived Birds of Prey series back in 2003. Alaina Huffman brought her to life in a recurring capacity on The WB’s Superman prequel Smallville.
The most famous adaptation came in Arrow when Katie Cassidy portrayed two different versions of Dinah Laurel Lance throughout the course of the show’s eight-year run. As well as that, Caity Lotz portrayed the original Canary (who inspired Laurel), while Juliana Harkavy portrayed second Black Canary Dinah Drake. Both Harkavy and Cassidy will hopefully reprise their roles in highly-anticipated possible Arrow spin-off Green Arrow and The Canaries.
