The action star, who played Crossbones in the MCU, doesn’t see The Punisher in his trajectory anymore.

Frank Grillo is currently guest-starring in the latest season of corporate drama Billions on Showtime. The veteran action star has had prominent roles in Joe Carnahan’s The Grey and The Purge films. He’s also no stranger to superheroes.

MCU fans will undoubtedly recognize him as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones – a role he played in Captain America sequels The Winter Soldier and Civil War (not-to-mention a surprise return in Avengers: Endgame). However, he once expressed interest playing the trigger-happy vigilante Frank Castle/The Punisher as early back as 2014.

However, in a recent interview with Uproxx, he revealed that he doesn’t see that in his immediate future anymore, praising his buddy Jon Bernthal for what he did as the character in the Netflix shows Daredevil and The Punisher. He also explained that his path has taken a slight turn, commenting:

"“That’s not in my trajectory now. It’s not where my life is taking me anymore, and my friend Jonny Bernthal did an amazing job. My life and what I want to do is much different now, and I think I’m outgrowing that whole kind of Marvel and superhero thing.”"

While the two-year mark is almost up for the likes of Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist on Netflix (meaning that they could return in MCU properties in the future), The Punisher will take a little while longer as the series was only formally cancelled by the streaming giant last February.

By the time development can begin on a potential revival series (whether it will be streamed on Hulu or Disney Plus remains to be seen) or a movie appearance, Bernthal could have moved on. That said, it Marvel Studios would like his iteration of The Punisher to return due to his popularity, they’ll undoubtedly find a way to make it work.

As for Grillo? He revealed that he’s been keeping busy working on action thrillers with Joe Carnahan, adding that he’s “having a good time”.

Despite outgrowing the whole superhero shtick as he claims, Grillo previously revealed he is contracted for at least five MCU films. So he could always reprise his role as Crossbones in another offering or appear as a different character. He even joked about becoming a “middle-aged, Italian Captain America.”
