Miles Morales is getting his own Spider-Man game and it’s a really big deal.

Playstation had quite an incredible rollout at Sony’s PS5 gameplay event, announcing a lot of the games coming out for the new Playstation 5 console. We’re getting a new Ratchet and Clank, Resident Evil, and Horizon Forbidden West. But there was one announcement that stood out to this writer – and that was the new Spider-Man game Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The first Spider-Man game for Playstation 4 was a hit. It covered a lot of the character’s lore. We got Mary Jane (who’s an investigative reporter), Aunt May, and Miles Morales. The latter of the three was revealed during the first promo for the game, and as a result, fans of Miles assumed this meant that he was going to become Spider-Man. When it happened, we all smiled because there was a chance that, going forward, he’d be a character in a future Spider-Man project.

What we didn’t know was that he was going to get his own game.

This universe’s Miles Morales has a lot of the same qualities that the original Miles does. For example, they both feel the need and want to help people even if it means getting hurt in the process. A big difference, however, is this Miles Morales is smarter (well, on more of a genius level).

Miles in the comic book is no slouch, but he’s not a genius. What he does have is a lot of street smarts. It’ll be cool to see if the Miles in this game will be making his own gadgets like Peter did. Regardless, we should have faith that Insomniac Games won’t let us down. And one thing we should recognize is that making Miles a headliner for the Playstation 5 is a very big deal.

Why Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a really big deal

Insomniac Games and Playstation could have gone with Peter Parker. After all, he’s one of the most recognized characters in pop culture. But going with Miles Morales as the headliner of their first Playstation 5 Spider-Man project shows an enormous amount of trust in the character.

Over the past five years, Miles Morales has become incredibly popular. The animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse certainly helped, and that popularity has made him profitable. Even then, they still could have easily gone with Spider-Man featuring Miles Morales. But instead, this is going to be his own game. Not bad for a character that’s only been around less than a decade.

There’s also the fact that Miles Morales is a person of color. There haven’t been a lot of characters of color headlining comic book games in the past. The only one that really comes to mind is the Blade game for the first Playstation back in 2000.

More from Spider-Man

Sure, we’ve had Storm, Bishop, and Luke Cage appear in games over the years, but none of them have ever headlined one. They’ve always been part of a bigger team. Sometimes they weren’t on the cover at all (which is shocking considering how popular Storm is).

The success of Spider-Man: Miles Morales could very well pave the way for more characters of color (such as Black Panther or any of the aforementioned heroes) headlining their own games.

All in all, the preview of Spider-Man: Miles Morales looked incredible. It showcased Miles’ venom blast and his camouflage mode. We also got a glimpse of the gameplay itself, and it looks just as crisp and smooth as the previous Spider-Man game. With all of that in mind, it’s highly likely that Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be very successful, and this could be the beginning of great things for the Miles Morales Spider-Man franchise.

Next. Why we need more of J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU. dark
