James Gunn teases John Cena’s Suicide Squad character, and it sounds amazing.

As many film enthusiasts know by now, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad completed principal photography back in February of this year. It is the only picture that is part of the slate of DC Films with a release date not affected by the worldwide pandemic (because its release date is still quite far off).

WWE superstar-turned-actor John Cena joined the project in an announcement that had fans overwhelmed with excitement, and that excitement has surged for many reasons over the past year: One of them being down to the fact that we still don’t know who he’s playing.

A fan recently reached out on Twitter with possible suggestions as to who the professional wrestler should play and this prompted an enthusiastic response from Gunn himself.

Admittedly, some of these suggestions (the likes of Bane, KG Beast and Solomon Grundy) are fair choices, but Gunn could be going for an option fans would least expect. It wouldn’t be surprising if he opts for a largely obscure character that could ultimately be made famous by the film.

More from DCEU

A follow-up to the 2016 collective supervillain film, The Suicide Squad is a standalone and more of a soft reboot for the DC Extended Universe. It stars an all-star cast consisting of Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, John Cena, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee and several more.

James Gunn is writing the screenplay and directing the picture. Charles Roven, Michael De Luca, Peter Safran and Dan Lin will produce for Atlas Entertainment and The Safran Company under the DC Films banner while Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute. Task Force X will meet their “hit” in theaters Aug 21st, 2021.
