It seems the turtles with a half shell are getting another chance on the big screen as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be rebooted in an unexpected way.

In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed by Deadline that Nickelodeon has joined forces with actor, comedian, writer and filmmaker Seth Rogen and his production arm Point Grey Pictures to produce yet another movie reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This time, however, it will be a CG-animated movie.

At present, the latest entry of the Nickelodeon franchise – the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated TV series – is on hiatus with multiple of the confirmed 26 episodes of the second season having aired on Nicktoons. Though the Turtles have always been a staple of the small screen, the idea of them returning to the big one is an exciting prospect.

Since the Bayhem 2010s live-action reboot of the turtles in a half shell, Paramount has been at work attempting to revitalize the brand. It was only last year it was announced A Quiet Place producers, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, were producing a reboot with Bad Words writer Andrew Dodge penning the screenplay.

Clearly, from the latest news, Paramount decided to move on from Platinum Dunes as they sought another writer in Brendan O’Brien of the Neighbors series – who is now set to write the film. Director Jeff Rowe will helm the project and direct O’Brien’s screenplay. Rogen and Evan Goldberg are producing alongside Josh Fagen, James Weaver and Executive Vice President of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon, Ramsey Naito.

ViacomCBS President of Kids & Family Brian Robbins revealed that he was “looking forward to what they do”, adding that  “Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction…”

This isn’t the first time that the superheroes underwent a CGI animated makeover. A 2007 standalone film titled TMNT was loosely tied to the ’90s live-action films. It starred James Arnold Taylor, Nolan North, Mikey Kelly, Mitchell Whitfeld, Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar and it was helmed by writer/director Kevin Munroe, produced by Imagi Animation Studios and released under Warner Bros. Pictures.

No official title or release date has been announced as of yet, but it’s safe to say that fans of the franchise will be thrilled at this new development.
