She proudly represents the LGBTQ community

Prior to the announcement of Leslie’s casting, both Warner Bros. and The CW stood firm in stating that not only would the character replacing Katy Kane be an out lesbian, they were adamant about this character being played by an actress within the LGBTQ+ community. Thankfully, all parties involved kept their word.

In a statement responding to yesterday’s announcement, Javicia Leslie confirmed that she herself was bisexual. “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television,” she said herself. “And as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Beyond her own sexuality, she already has experience in playing LGBTQ+ characters in media. Previously in God Friended Me, Leslie’s character was a lesbian.

It is abundantly clear that Leslie is determined to do right by the community not only in her performance, but we should expect her to have some creative input in terms of making sure her character’s romantic lifestyle is portrayed with the utmost authenticity and the respect that the LGBTQ+ community deserves. This kind of representation makes us even more excited to see her arrive on the show.
