HBO Max is developing a TV series that will serve as a companion to Robert Pattinson’s big-screen The Batman.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of next year’s most anticipated films, but while it may be set outside the DCEU, it too is looking to launch its own shared universe – one that will expand across film and TV.

HBO Max has just revealed that it has given a series order to a The Batman companion series that will focus on the Gotham City Police Department. It will be helmed by Reeves himself, Boardwalk Empire‘s Terence Winter, The Batman producer Dylan Clark and Warner Bros. Television.

The Batman expands into TV

Billed as a groundbreaking TV series in HBO Max’s official press release, the show is set in the same universe as the film and will offer a further examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.

More from Batman

It’s currently unknown as to whether or not Batman himself, Robert Pattinson, will feature in the series in any capacity, but there’s a strong possibility that at least one of the film’s supporting characters could end up headlining the show (much like the MCU’s Phil Coulson, Clark Gregg, has done on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD over the past eight years).

This isn’t the first time that the GCPD will headline a Batman-inspired TV series as Fox’s Gotham followed the exploits of Ben McKenzie’s young Jim Gordon and Donal Logue’s Harvey Bullock as the duo attempted to clean up the GCPD. It would later focus on a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and his journey to becoming Batman. The show ran for five seasons and concluded last year.

The upcoming HBO Max show will be produced by Reeves’ 6th and Idaho production company – which the filmmaker recently made exclusive to Warner Bros. TV.
