Robert Rodriguez announced that Sharkboy and Lavagirl will appear in his upcoming Netflix film We Can Be Heroes.

Robert Rodriguez – the writer, director and producer of upcoming superhero film We Can Be Heroes – has made a shocking revelation about the Netflix exclusive. He teased the return of Sharkboy and Lavagirl from The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.

The filmmaker, helmed as the “one-man film crew,” appeared on Collider’s panel of directors at San Diego Comic-Con@Home – which also had Colin Trevorrow and Joseph Kosinski as guests on the platform. Rodriguez expressed how Sharkboy and Lavagirl play into the forthcoming standalone sequel to the aforementioned match-up We Can Be Heroes.

Rodriguez conceived the creation of Sharkboy and Lavagirl after the studio wanted him to produce another potentially successful film in-line with his Spy Kids franchise utilizing 3D technology. After playing with his son in the backyard by the swimming pool, that is when the idea sparked.

As for how the characters will return in this unexpected sequel, Rodriguez explained:

"“Sharkboy and Lavagirl show up as parents who now have a daughter who has shark and lava powers.”"

On the Directors on Directors segment as part of SDCC@Home, Rodriguez, after discussing with Trevorrow and Kosinski about their respective careers and their current projects (We Can Be Heroes; Jurassic World: Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick), the filmmaker told Collider that the bigwigs at Netflix wanted to create something similar to Spy Kids.

Taylor Dooley is reprising her role as Lavagirl, but it is not yet confirmed whether Taylor Lautner (who has since become a household name thanks to his role as Jacob Black in the Twilight Saga) will reprise his role as Sharkboy.

We Can Be Heroes is about the children of Earth’s superheroes working together in order to rescue their parents from alien invaders. It stars Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater, Akira Akbar, Pedro Pascal, Sung Kang and Boyd Holbrook. It is produced by Troublemaker Studios and distributed by Netflix.

It will be interesting to see if We Can Be Heroes delivers as The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl underperformed at the box office and was not well-received by critics.
