Comic book creator and entrepreneur Todd McFarlane is confident that his Spawn reboot movie will proceed at Blumhouse Productions.

Todd McFarlane – the comic book creator, publisher, self-made businessman and co-founder of Image Comics – made a bit more noise on the forthcoming Spawn live-action reboot movie. As reported  by Movieweb, things appear to be moving forward in spite of the lack of recent news on the subject.

During 2017’s edition of San Diego Comic-Con, McFarlane announced that he planned to reboot on his own creation, Spawn for the big screen. He also revealed that it would be produced by the indie production house Blumhouse Productions – who had another recent hit in this year’s The Invisible Man. Since then, Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner have been attached to the project as the titular anti-hero and one-half of the NYPD homicide detective duo Maximilian “Twitch” Williams respectively.

The Spawn reboot is still happening

There were once some rumblings of creative differences between McFarlane and the owner/founder at Blumhouse (who also happened to be one of the film producers) Jason Blum. Although the creator behind Spawn (who is writing and directing the film) has taken accountability over the way things have been heading.

Now, appearing in a virtual capacity at this year’s edition of the comic book convention Comic-Con@Home, he was asked about the status of the film – to which he responded:

"“We are in the process of adding, I think, not only a home run but potentially a grand slam to our movie. I’m not saying that as a teaser. I’m saying that legitimately. It’s happening. It’s happening right now.”“It’s just that the business of Hollywood has it’s sort of ebb and flow… They seem to be a little bit shy about wanting to be public about all of this… all I can say is that the movie is going full-steam ahead. I know I have said it before. I’m telling you, it’s going full-steam ahead in terms of news that hopefully you and I will be able to break fairly soon.”"

Well, this sounds like great news as it has been radio silence for a number of months. You can’t say McFarlane’s enthusiasm for the potential film has wavered over these past couple of years as it’s clear he’s still incredibly committed to making it happen. This writer is hopeful that there are a lot more announcements coming soon and that the Spawn movie will progress further next year.

More from Movies

That is not the only news the comics scribe, artist and entrepreneur gave. He mentioned that since the lockdown, there have been other opportunities to consider. McFarlane had meetings with some TV directors (really hope one of them was either David Nutter or Glen Winter) about the possibility of adapting more properties from Image Comics. He explained:

"“The people we’re talking to are big directors and big writers. I assume we’ll then be able to get big actors to come on to it, and the stuff will begin to tumble. Let me also say, I’m not the only one doing this. Right? Everybody in Hollywood has got time to develop.”“Everyone in Hollywood has time to make phone calls to all of these people…. Even though we can get all of this stuff moving into development with big names, the people who actually have to say yes that are gonna produce it when that time comes may get flooded from every angle, of every person who has been doing the exact same thing that we are.”"

The notion of more Image Comics properties is certainly quite exciting. There is an abundance of characters and storylines that deserve to see the light of day (on either the big or the small screen), so let’s just hope McFarlane’s positivity and commitment to the Spawn project is only the beginning of more Image adaptations.
