Victor Von Doom

Film: Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver SurferFantastic Four (2015)

This is the one. It’s rare that you’ll find someone who actually enjoyed any of the renditions of Victor Von Doom.

The first one was dismissed right from the beginning of the movie. Ben Grimm called him “Stripmall science.” How can he be taken seriously after that? The next one had the science, but none of the style and flair that goes with being Dr. Doom. Plus, where was the magic? Doom’s level of knowledge with magic is almost on the level of Doctor Strange. Granted, it can take a while to get to that point, but there was no hint of getting to that point. And let’s not get into the “mask” they used in the 2015 Fantastic Four.

In their defense, Doom is a difficult character to nail. He can’t just be arrogant; he has to have a specific tone and demeanor that goes along with it. Neither of the previous actors had that (however, Tom Ellis does). Actually, they didn’t have anything that resembled Doom because the material completely let them down.

To make things worse, they tried to turn him into something he isn’t. They don’t need to update Dr. Doom to fit today’s world. Doom’s personality is timeless. His knowledge of science and magic makes him a near-invincible character. So far, all we’ve gotten is a guy who barely knows science and someone with a forgettable performance. Completely disappointing.
