Captain Marvel 2 finally has a director and it’s a very exciting choice indeed!

Carol Danvers is set to take flight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again in Captain Marvel 2, set to arrive in theaters on July 08, 2022. The hero’s first film was helmed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, but in January of 2020, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the duo would not be returning to helm the sequel — don’t worry though, because according to the trade, the directors will remain involved in the MCU.

With the sequel being less than two years away, pieces are finally falling into place for Carol Danvers’ big screen return. According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has found the person who will be in charge of telling Carol’s new story: Nia DaCosta.

DaCosta is a star on the rise. She made her directorial debut with 2018’s Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson. The film centers on a former drug dealer who’s forced to return to the drug world after her sister (Lily James) returns to her life, now pregnant.

Little Woods became a critical success, and led to DaCosta getting hired to helm the upcoming horror film Candyman, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II —as a side note, DaCosta joins the list of
horror movie directors helming superhero adventures; a list that includes Sam Raimi, Scott Derrickson and even James Gunn (yes, we’re counting Slither as a horror movie, despite its comedic elements).

If you want to get a feel for DaCosta’s directing style, you can take a look at the trailer for
Candyman here:

Following the news of her hiring, Captain Marvel co-director Ryan Fleck took to Twitter to congratulate DaCosta on behalf of himself and his partner:

DaCosta continues Marvel Studios’ tradition of hiring directors on the rise to helm their blockbusters. It’s a formula that has worked wonders for the past 12 years, and going by DaCosta’s track record, she will continue that winning streak for the company.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

As we’ve come to expect from upcoming superhero films, not much is known about Captain Marvel 2 —except for one little, yet important detail, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. This past January, THR stated that Captain Marvel 2 would jump forward a few decades ahead of its predecessor, putting Carol Danvers in present day. That doesn’t tell us much, but it’s exciting to think Carol will be performing her super heroics in a modern world.

Now, there’s a curious piece of trivia attached to DaCosta’s hiring. One of DaCosta’s Candyman
stars is Teyonah Parris. “Why is that curious?” you ask as you stare into the cosmos? Well, Parris is also starring in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, as the adult version of Monica Rambeau – the daughter of Carol Danvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch). It’s a fun
connection, and one that could pay off if Monica makes her way to Captain Marvel 2, as fans have been speculating for some time now.
