The Batman’s Robert Pattinson couldn’t pull the wool over The Dark Knight director’s eyes.

At only 34-years-old Robert Pattinson is already a veteran of Hollywood. The former Twilight star can next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated Tenet (whenever it does eventually get released to cinemas), but he’s also set to play the titular role in next year’s The Batman.

Ironically enough, the two roles almost caused a clash in Pattinson’s schedule – one that was made all the more awkward because of how secretive he had to be about both projects.

Speaking to The Irish Times, Pattinson revealed that he actually tried to sneak away from Tenet to audition for The Batman. He commented:

"It’s funny because Chris is so secretive about everything to do with his movies… And then I had to be really secretive about Batman stuff. So I had to lie to Chris about having to go for a screen test — I said I had a family emergency. And as soon as I said ‘it’s a family emergency’ he said: ‘You’re doing the Batman audition, aren’t you?’”"

It’s really no surprise that Christopher Nolan was so in-tune with Pattinson’s comic book crime-fighting aspirations. After all, he is the man who revitalized the character for a new generation, with his Dark Knight trilogy (which consists of 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises) being considered one of – if not the – greatest movie trilogies of all time.

Meanwhile, The Batman will serve as a standalone reboot of the franchise (after the character’s introduction in the DC Extended Universe had divisive results). It’s described as a tale with Noir elements and director Matt Reeves unveiled the first look at Pattinson’s Caped Crusader earlier this year – to an overwhelmingly positive reception.

This won’t be the only Batman on the big screen, however, as it was recently reported that the original franchise’s Dark Knight, Michael Keaton, would be replacing Ben Affleck in a mentor-like role within the DCEU.
