Batgirl (Volume 3)

Oh, you thought that the first volume of Batgirl was going to be the only one on this list? Well, think again as the third volume of Batgirl, which ran for 24 issues, follows the fourth Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, after Cassandra Cain gives up the title.

At first glance, it seems like a downgrade to go from Cassandra to Stephanie, who was previously also Spoiler and Robin for a time, but really, it’s just different, which is where this series shines.

This is probably one of the most light-hearted mainline Bat-family comics to have ever been published and that is what absolutely works in its favor. Stephanie is an awkward, young woman who is constantly trying to prove herself to everyone, which is what makes this series so endearing to read. Stephanie is such a massively empathetic character that it’s hard not to latch onto her almost immediately.

Plus, the series is funny. It’s not a comedy or anything, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously either. There a lot of purposefully bad jokes that come from Stephanie, but when there are the times that series need to be serious, it doesn’t shy away from those moments either. And honestly, what this series proves is that Batgirl doesn’t have been any one thing. She can be embodied by whoever is wearing the suit at that time.
