Courtney giving Pat his gift

The first time we see Courtney, she’s five and waiting to give her dad a Christmas, but he never shows. Fast forward ten years later, she finally has found her dad to give her gift to and that’s Pat. Everything about this scene is so sweet and is the absolute full circle completion of Courtney’s journey throughout the season. To quote her, the gift was something “she had been waiting a long time to give [Pat].”

Everything about this scene, from the way it’s shot to Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson’s performances is absolute perfection. It’s so clear from the camera angle slightly look down on Courtney as she’s waiting for Pat to open the gift that she’s reverted back to the little girl she was when first saw her. Combine that with her wide eyes and slightly open mouth, she looks so much younger than she is, which is exactly what this scene is going for. We finally get to see the validation that she was looking for ever since that first scene and seeing her in an almost child-like state makes that clear. Add on Pat’s simple smile and quiet “I love it,” which leads to a nice hug, everything about this scene is perfection and a great endcap for the season.
