Unsure of himself to begin with

One of the reasons why Bobby has never reached his potential is due to his insecurities. Despite being one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy, he’s always seemed too scared to embrace who he was or explore his powers. This changed in issue No. 2 of Wolverine in the X-Men.

Wolverine had a heart to heart with Iceman. He told him that he needed Bobby to step it up. When Bobby asked Logan what he needed, Logan simply said, “Something amazing, Bobby. Nothing less.” Iceman did just that. From then on, Bobby Drake made it a point to be better and do better.

Logan’s faith in Bobby gave Iceman the confidence he needed. However, it wasn’t just that one time with Logan. Kitty Pryde was crucial in his growth. She was one of the few women that Bobby dated that seemed to truly believe in him and see past the jokes. She’s also one of the few people in the world that Bobby trusts with his life and his feelings. Her love and friendship helped him become a more confident hero.

The movies have to show this progression. For nothing else than the message that comes with it. It shows people the strength that comes from loved ones. How others believing in you can help you fulfill your true potential. There’s also a lesson on how the only thing that can keep you down is yourself. It isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.
