Supergirl: 5 comic stories to read while waiting for season 6
By Scott Brown
Supergirl (Vol. 4)
Well, it looks like this list is starting off with a Supergirl series that does not in fact, star Kara Zor-El as Supergirl. Instead, this series features Linda Danvers after the previous version of Supergirl, Matrix, bonds with her as she’s dying. In case you’re wondering, yes, this is from the ’90s. It’s an odd origin for this version of Supergirl, but it absolutely works in favor for the series as a whole.
Written by Peter David with art by Gary Frank, Leonard Kirk, and several others, one would think that a Supergirl series would be sci-fi (and usually, one would be right). However, what makes this series so interesting and different from other Supergirl stories is that it’s fantasy with an emphasis on theological themes. It’s an interesting take on the Supergirl mythos that feels so different from everything that came before and what’s come after. Supergirl literally becomes an angel pretty early on too which is pretty neat.
The series ends on a bit of lackluster note though as it’s clear editorial was phasing out the Linda Danvers character for the return of Kara Zor-El. This is disappointing as Linda has basically disappeared since – except in Peter David’s creator-owned series Fallen Angel, which is great in its own right, going just as Lin for obvious legal reasons.
