Report: Joaquin Phoenix to return to Joker for two sequels
According to a new report, Joaquin Phoenix is expected to return to the role of Joker in not one but two sequels.
Joker left the world in awe last year. Regardless of your opinion on the movie itself, there is no denying that it took the world by storm, receiving acclaim from the vast majority of critics because of Joaquin Phoenix’s absolutely incredible performance as Batman’s Clown Prince of Crime.
But a Batman movie Joker was not as the standalone film was a gritty reimagining of the comic book character that placed him in a world as realistic as director Todd Phillips could come up with. However, according to a new report by the Mirror, it may not be that much of a standalone after all.
The Mirror claims that Phoenix has been offered $50 million to reprise his Academy Award-winning role in two sequels to Joker, adding that their insider told them that the actor was convinced the film was a standalone but that he now “wants to play this character again”.

The report goes as far as to claim that scripts are being written as the negotiations continue and that those negotiations are based around the possibility of Phoenix, Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper returning for sequels in 2022 and 2024.
It’s important to note that this hasn’t been confirmed by DC Comics or Warner Bros. as of yet so, at the moment, it’s still very much a rumor. That said, it’s not the first time that the idea of a Joker sequel has been teased and it’s certainly a very interesting rumor at that.
Following the success of the 2019 film, it’s easy to see why Warner Bros. would be interested in a sequel, but is this one of those situations where it’s better to let the story dictate decisions and not the success of the project?
