Jean Grey and Cyclops

Jean Grey and Scott Summers’ relationship is on the level of any comic book love. They’ve had more ups and downs than almost anyone. Considering how many times Jean has died on him, that’s a big hurdle to jump.

Despite her deaths, Wolverine’s constant advances, Cyclops’ affair with Emma Frost, and a dozen other things, Jean and Cyclops have managed to make it work. Sadly, their love is something that hasn’t been highlighted much in the movies. It’s been mentioned, toyed with and teased, but not to the extent it was needed.

When Jean (or who we thought was Jean) sacrificed herself in the comics, it hurt everyone. None more than Cyclops. He had to watch the love of his life die to save the galaxy. It was a noble sacrifice, but that doesn’t take the hurt away.

Seeing the two of them fall in love and lose each other is a heart-wrenching moment. One that will have a more emotional impact on fans if their love is emphasized. Both times Jean Grey died in the movies it wasn’t a big deal. When Jean killed Cyclops in X-Men: The Last Stand people were dumbfounded. It was a throwaway moment that disgusted fans of the comic book. Another pointless moment in the Fox saga and an approach that can’t be repeated should the MCU tackle the storyline.
