4. Maggie Sawyer

Floriana Lima’s Maggie Sawyer was a fantastic nod to the comic book source material that Supergirl is based on. The addition of Maggie in Season 2 meant that the show had a canon lesbian character in the cast roster.

As a police officer, Maggie was on an even keel with Alex Danvers. It’s no wonder the two became friends and eventually more. Despite Maggie and Alex’s relationship being written beautifully, the writers rushed them into a proposal by season’s end.

Then Lima decided to step back in Season 3 (which is unarguably the series’ poorest season), and the character ended up being severely under-written. The contrived wedge driven between Alex and Maggie didn’t help either and a potentially great character made a forgettable exit.

Maggie’s return in the final season of Supergirl should have less to do with her former romance with Alex, and more to do with adding to the queer identities represented on the show. We can imagine Maggie being happy for Alex and her relationship with Kelly (we can only assume that Alex and Kelly are still together in the end), and perhaps Maggie has a stable relationship of her own.

In an ideal world, Maggie would reappear on Batwoman, considering she and Kate Kane are a long-term couple in the comics. Maybe Maggie and Kate are already a couple and they show up to help the Superfriends.
