Robert Pattinson has opened up about the pressures of playing an iconic role such as The Batman and how he actually finds it exciting.

Robert Pattinson is set to follow in the footsteps of many iconic actors by donning the cape and cowl in The Batman. He joined Matt Reeves’ production last year when he impressed the-powers-that-be at Warner Bros., making it down to the final two before ultimately winning out. Since then, all eyes have been on him to see what he does with the role in the upcoming movie.

Playing a role as legendary as the Caped Crusader is no easy feat. Just ask Michael Keaton or Ben Affleck – two iconic stars in their own-right who had to overcome premature outcry from comic book fans who initially didn’t think they were right for the part. In the end, however, they proved those fans wrong with their performance.

Pattinson is already doing that. The brief trailer for The Batman that was released at DC FanDome was praised for many reasons – one of which was the actor’s convincing take on the Dark Knight.

But how does that kind of pressure to succeed impact a veteran like Pattinson? Well if you ask him, it’s all quite exciting, really.

Speaking to Total Film magazine (H/T: Digital Spy), he revealed that he enjoyed the notion that he could potentially “mess up” something so iconic, adding that it was a feeling he was actually familiar with.

"“There’s a slightly different feeling when you know loads and loads of people are going to watch something you’re working on… I weirdly enjoyed it during Twilight, the idea that you can mess it up. I guess I felt confident. I wanted to be on the big stage.”"

Pattinson’s role as Edward Cullen in Twilight and its four sequels was career-defining no doubt, and it turned him into a household name overnight simply because the book series was so popular. He has since moved into a direction of smaller productions and critical acclaim, delivering some of the best performances of his career thus far.

It’s clear that The Batman will land somewhere in between and it’s great to hear that Pattinson is using his experience of big roles to his advantage.

The Batman hits theaters on October 1, 2021.
