Zack Snyder has spoken about who he intended on casting as Catwoman/Selina Kyle in the DCEU and what kind of role she would have played opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman.

Zoe Kravitz is set to bring Catwoman back to the silver screen for the first time in a decade when Matt Reeves’ The Batman arrives in theaters in 2022. However, that film won’t be set in the ongoing DC Extended Universe and will instead be a standalone DC adventure that could spawn its very own trilogy. That doesn’t mean that DCEU originator Zack Snyder didn’t once have his own plans for Batman’s femme fatale antihero.

Who would have played Catwoman in the DCEU?

Snyder – the director of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – appeared on The Nerd Queens’ League of Mayhem YouTube stream and shared some details about his vision of the DCEU. During it, he revealed that if he had been given the chance to cast Catwoman in the shared universe, he would have picked Watchmen‘s Carla Gugino.

He also reportedly revealed that Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne would have been married and gotten divorced a decade before Batman v Superman.

More from Batman

It goes without saying that Gugino would have made a great Catwoman and she would have played opposite Ben Affleck’s grizzled Dark Knight really well. That’s a dynamic that makes it all the more frustrating that we didn’t see it play out that way on-screen – and with the DCEU moving in a different direction now, it’s unlikely that we’ll get to see Gugino and Affleck together.

Snyder will get to bow out on his terms when “Snyder Cut” of Justice League hits HBO Max next year. Meanwhile, Batman and Catwoman’s unique dynamic will continue to shine as Zoe Kravitz’s Selina will cross paths with Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader in The Batman.

Catwoman has a rich history on the screen. Julie Newmar became the first to play the role in the first two seasons of the 1966 Batman TV series. When she couldn’t reprise it in the film adaptation, Lee Meriwether stepped in and Eartha Kitt did the same in the third season. Decades later, Michelle Pfeiffer redefined the role in 1992’s Batman Returns and Halle Berry reinvented the character in 2004’s Catwoman before Anne Hathaway brought Selina back in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. Camren Bicondova played a younger version of the character in all five seasons of Fox’s Gotham while Lili Simmons portrayed an adult version of her in the series finale.
