Kate Mara discusses her bad experience during the Fantastic Four reboot
Kate Mara recently opened up about her bad experience while filming the reviled Fantastic Four reboot.
Veteran actress Kate Mara can currently be seen on FX On Hulu’s A Teacher alongside Nick Robinson, but she has been catching the attention of people with her powerful performances for years. Among her array of movies is the reviled Fantastic Four.
That film wasn’t very well-received by anyone but it sounds like Mara herself wasn’t thrilled with it either as she detailed her own “horrible experience” whilst filming the Josh Trank reboot that was stylized as FANT4STIC. Mara, who played Susan Storm/Invisible Woman in the film under 20th Century Fox, opened up during an interview with the Emmys (H/T: NME.)
She did not lean into the specifics of her experience on set but admitted that she didn’t regret doing the movie because she ended up getting married to co-star, Jamie Bell, who played Ben Grimm/The Thing. She told the Emmys:
"“I’ve never talked about it before. I married one of my co-stars, so I don’t regret doing that movie at all. But do I wish I had responded differently to certain things? Yes, definitely.”"
She went on to detail how she had two bad experiences with male directors, and even though she didn’t get on with every female director she worked with, she never felt like any problems were down to her being a woman. But in the wake of the #MeToo movement, she wanted to join other actresses in sharing their experiences, adding:
"“The fact of the matter is that my two horrendous experiences with directors were male directors… ‘This is happening because I’m a woman.’… it 100 per cent was only happening with me; it was a power dynamic thing.”"
Meanwhile, Trank expressed his own regrets about directing FANT4STIC, stating that he regretted not fighting hard enough to cast a black actress to play Susan Storm.
Fantastic Four was Fox’s attempt of a rights retainer as following the disappointing box office performance of the 2007 sequel to Tim Story’s Fantastic Four (Rise of the Silver Surfer) the decision was made to reboot. Trank was hired in 2012 as director, Jeremy Slater and Seth Grahame-Smith came onboard as screenwriters, Matthew Vaughn and Simon Kinberg were tapped as producers with the latter making significant rewrites to the screenplay.

Shooting began in May 2014 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and lasted for approximately two months. FANT4STIC premiered in the United States on Aug. 7, 2015 to disastrous proportions, receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews and a poor box office performance. Now, following The Walt Disney Co. acquisition of Fox, the rights to the FF have reverted back to Marvel, suggesting that a reboot set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is inevitable.
Speaking of which, in a discussion on Collider’s Ladies Night, Mara spoke about her short cameo in the MCU’s Iron Man 2. She revealed that there “wasn’t a promise” but it may have been something that could lead into a more substantial role when Mara was in talks with its director, Jon Favreau. On the experience, she concluded that it “really was fun”, summing it up as “a weird cameo that turned into really nothing. But I don’t mind.”
