John Ridley has divulged some details on the new Dark Knight in The Next Batman ahead of DC Future State.

As reported by CBR, DC writer John Ridley has revealed some interesting details regarding his new title with the character Batman, appropriately named The Next Batman, with artist Nick Derrington. It will be part of DC Future State, a two-month wide-scale comic book line.

Speaking to the DC Nation Presents DC Future State magazine, the prolific, award-winning scribe behind the powerful period-drama 12 Years a Slave shared some interesting new details about the new Batman who is applying more rudimentary methods to fight crime in future Gotham City. Ridley said:

"“It’s really difficult to avoid technology and facial recognition. You have a Batman who has to operate in a space where the only advantage he can have is to be analog. When you start removing those digital tools, you’re like a caveman fighting computers.”"

A new Batman for a new story

As Ridley described, their new Batman sounds like he’s a lot more independent in his mission than the original (whether he has allies or not is not yet known) and will have to employ other tactics to overcome the obstacles of this world that he’s in.

Gotham City in this new era has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against “masks” – those considered vigilantes by the law – as there is a law enforcement agency known as the Magistrate that utilizes the command of cutting-edge technology and employs some ruthless methods. Ridley concluded:

"“It really is rolling Batman back to being an individual who is so much more about wit, his guile and his physical acumen. You definitely have to have a different strategy. You’re outmanned, you’re outgunned and the only thing you can really do is go back to the original Batman – the shadows are your friend. Night is your ally. The city is your battleground.”"

This time for the new Batman, there is a no holds barred approach to enforcing the law against vigilantism by the GCPD as the Magistrate’s leader – Peacekeeper One – will not be providing any leeway.

Peacekeeper One’s plans will gradually be revealed as the series moves forward, although, what is clear is the Magistrate intend to assist the GCPD in eliminating the vigilantes once and for all.

The new Batman will not get much help from the law this time around, so do not expect a Commissioner Gordon-like figure to assist the new Dark Knight.

This DC Future State event will begin sometime in January 2021.
