A Star Wars Rogue Squadron will be coming from Patty Jenkins.

A Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie will be coming to theaters around Christmas 2023 from director Patty Jenkins, who is known for her work on DC Extended Universe films Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984.

Jenkins revealed this news through a teaser video posted on her Twitter account on Thursday evening, December 10 in the middle of a deluge of upcoming entertainment news during the Disney Investor Day.

In the video, Jenkins glides down an airport runway at sunset (on hockey rollerblades) while talking about her fighter pilot father before donning an X-wing fighter pilot helmet as the title card faded in.

“Every day I would go outside and see my father and his squadron taking off, and it’s one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Jenkins stated, adding that she’s been searching for the “perfect story” ever since to tell about the pilot experience.

In the Legends timeline of novels, Rogue Squadron was one of the featured groups, along with Wraith Squadron, in the 10-book X-Wing series by Michael Stackpoole and Aaron Allston written from 1996 to 2012 about fighter pilots headed by Luke Skywalker’s old buddy Wedge Antilles.

The X-Wing series began about seven years after the Battle of Yavin, ending around 30 years later well into the New Republic era.

Aside from Wedge, one of the main characters was eventual Jedi Corran Horn, and a variety of humans (both male and female) and alien species of various types were able to exist in the unit as equals, which will play well towards Jenkins’ direction, and given her strong work with Diana Prince, it seems likely that the characters will mesh well and be a character-driven story.

So it sounds like Rogue Squadron will be Captain Marvel in the Star Wars universe, probably with the grounded tone of Rogue One and possibly with a few nods towards Top Gun.

Next. MCU: Rachel McAdams returning for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. dark
