Arrow’s Katherine McNamara discusses the status of potential spin-off Green Arrow and The Canaries as fans continue to campaign for the show’s pick-up.

It’s been some time since we’ve heard any news on Green Arrow and The Canaries. No, it’s been a long time since we’ve heard any news on it. The show is expected to be the next installment in The CW’s ever-growing Arrowverse but it’s been months and fans have yet to hear whether the show has been picked up or not.

Apparently, we’re not the only ones in the dark because Arrow star Katherine McNamara has yet to hear any word on the status of the potential spin-off. Speaking to TVLine ahead of her appearance in Stephen King’s The Stand, the actress commented:

"“It’s been a while now. I have no idea what’s on the horizon for that, but I do know that I’m not done with Mia Smoak.”"

She went on to add that the Arrowverse has a tendency for bringing people back in multiple ways and she’d be excited to explore those opportunities on Green Arrow and The Canaries, particularly because it would allow her to explore Mia Queen in ways that the original show couldn’t have.

"“I was really looking forward to seeing how Mia dealt with having this duality as a character — the fact that she had her post-Crisis future and her pre-Crisis future, and now she has the tools of both at her disposal. But also dealing with taking up her father’s mantle before she feels she’s ready, and before she feels as though she’s earned it. That would be an interesting journey.”"

Will Green Arrow and The Canaries be picked up?

It’s clear that The CW has yet to make a decision on the show but why haven’t there been any further updates about the status of it? After all, Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim was sure that announcements were coming back in June until plans seemingly changed.

More from Arrowverse

It’s not yet known if the show will be picked up, but there is clearly a demand for it. The backdoor pilot episode received the highest viewing figures for a non-crossover episode of Arrow‘s final season and it also received acclaim from fans and critics, making it a likely candidate for series pickup.

While the lack of news is undoubtedly frustrating – not-to-mention The CW’s subsequent development of a Powerpuff Girls series, a Black Lightning spin-off (through the same backdoor pilot method they used for Green Arrow and The Canaries) and a Wonder Girl TV series set within the Arrowverse all before discussing the Arrow spin-off’s future – the fact that the network hasn’t made an announcement on either it or The 100‘s backdoor pilot spin-off does keep the hope alive.

Green Arrow and The Canaries would see McNamara reprise her role as Mia Queen/Green Arrow alongside Arrow‘s leading lady Katie Cassidy and fellow Arrow vet Juliana Harkavy as two versions of the Black Canary.
