Thor: Love and Thunder: Who is Gorr the God Butcher?
By Mark Lynch
Gorr the God Butcher is set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, but who is he and why is he a threat to Thor?
Recently, there have been a lot of announcements involving the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During Disney Investor Day, we found out that Marvel’s Secret Invasion will be coming to Disney Plus, a trailer for Loki was released and there was also a loose schedule for upcoming Marvel Comics movies unveiled.
These were only a few of the reports about the future of Marvel Studios. Another major announcement came in the form of the confirmation of Christian Bale’s character in Thor: Love and Thunder.
There was a lot of speculation on who the veteran actor play. Would he play the CEO of Roxxon Dario Agger? A man who literally sold his soul to be a Minotaur. What about Odin’s brother Cul Borson? He may have the voice and range to play him. Those were great ideas, but ultimately wrong. In the end, he’s something even more dangerous than any of those villains. Christian Bale will play Gorr – the literal butcher of gods.
Who is Gorr the God Butcher?
There are different types of gods in the Marvel Comics pantheons. We know Thor is the God of Thunder, Loki is the God of Mischief (and sometimes lies), there’s even a god of wine. So, when you hear the name God Butcher, take that title seriously.
Gorr wasn’t always a god. He was an alien from a planet without a name. When his family was killed, he cursed the gods. The beings of his planet cast him out for being a blasphemer. Later, Gorr came across two beings that fell from what he perceived were the heavens. One of them possessed All-Black the Necrosword. He used the weapon to kill what he perceived to be a god.
After that, he wondered if there were more gods for him to kill and abandoned his planet and began a journey to kill as many gods as he could. If not for three different Thors from across time, Gorr would have successfully killed every god that ever existed.
How will Gorr play into Thor: Love and Thunder?
You’ve never seen a being like Gorr the God Butcher. He’s defeated or killed every god he’s gone up against. At one point he enslaved a young and brash Thor and kept All Father Thor trapped in his throne room. Thor: Love and Thunder may not have enough time to truly get into the history of Gorr and Thor’s relationship. It’s too long for one movie. However, we’ll probably see that Thor has battled him in the past. Battled and certainly lost.
Part of what makes Gorr so special is his ties to Thor’s past. He was one of the first beings to really put fear in the God of Thunder. During their first encounter, Gorr tortured a young Thor in his cove. Asking Thor to tell him everything he knew about the gods and Asgard. It’s not likely that we’ll witness something as gruesome as this because it’s too brutal for a Marvel Studios film. We could see something vaguely similar though. Perhaps a scene or two where Thor is beaten and barely escapes with his life.

It’s going to take the combined might of two Thors (the Odinson and Jane Foster) to beat Gorr the God Butcher. A battle that’s going to be unlike any that we’ve seen.
Thor: Love and Thunder already had fans excited. Another Thor movie directed by Taika Waititi is enough to get people to theaters. The addition of a villain like Gorr is an added bonus. Gorr isn’t like Thanos. His mission isn’t based on something that he considers to be noble. Gorr wants to kill all of the gods for revenge – the irony is that he becomes one himself. Gorr will leave the MCU becoming one of its most feared and dominant villains. And as a result of that, let’s hope he won’t be a one-off character.
