2020 might not have been the most eventful year for superhero movies, but the same could not be said for superhero shows!

Superhero shows continue to dominate the small screen, primarily via the DC Comics Universe which continues to make up the majority of the superhero shows currently airing — though Marvel is primed to make quite the mark in 2021 and beyond with its Marvel Cinematic Universe set shows!

Overall, 2020 has been kind to most superhero shows with the majority of our favorite shows securing new seasons set to drop in 2021 and beyond. However, the year has not been without cancellations with several fan-favorite shows set to wrap their runs with renewals that later turned into final season orders (or pseudo cancellations as we like to view them).

Superhero shows canceled and renewed this year

Renewed: Pennyworth season 2

Of the superhero shows on our list, Pennyworth is a unique entry as the show was renewed for season 2 in early 2020 with the new season beginning in December. As a result, we’ll have to wait to see if season 3 will be ordered as 2021 arrives.

Renewed: The Boys season 3

Renewed: Doom Patrol season 3

Renewed: Supergirl (Final Season)

The Arrowverse will continue to bid farewell to the Girl of Steel in 2021, as Supergirl signs off the airwaves with what will now be its final season.

Renewed: Stargirl season 2

Canceled: Helstrom

Renewed: Lucifer season 6 (Final Season)

While technically not a superhero show, we’re including Lucifer in our round-up as the series is set within the extended DC Universe as established in the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event. Much like a few other Arrowverse series on this list, Lucifer was renewed for a final season in 2020 with a premiere date for season 6 unknown.

Renewed: Raising Dion season 2

Renewed: The Umbrella Academy season 3

Canceled: Watchmen

Technically, Watchmen was not canceled but rather always envisioned by creator Damon Lindelof to be a limited series. While some fans (and HBO) hoped the season would continue, Lindelof has made it clear the show will not be coming back for a second season.

Renewed: Batwoman season 2

Renewed: Harley Quinn season 3

Renewed: Black Lightning (Final Season)

In a shocking turn of events, The CW confirmed the upcoming fourth season of Black Lightning will be the show’s final season. The one silver lining is the show could continue as a Painkiller spinoff starring Jordan Calloway is in the works.

Renewed before 2020 – Titans season 3, Young Justice season 4

For the sake of Titans and Young Justice fans, we can confirm Titans was renewed for season 3 and Young Justice for season 4 back in 2019 with premiere dates for the shows’ upcoming seasons not yet known.
