Thomas Jane who previously depicted Frank Castle aka The Punisher in 2004 has expressed interest in directing a Punisher movie led by Jon Bernthal.

As per Comicbook.com, Thomas Jane, the actor who portrayed Marvel’s signature crime-fighting vigilante anti-hero Frank Castle aka The Punisher in the 2004 film adaptation, revealed that he’d like to direct a Punisher movie – one that could theoretically be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When interviewed about his television directorial debut of the science-fiction series The Expanse, he was asked whether he would be interested in reprising his role as The Punisher again.

He certainly did not dismiss the opportunity, adding that it would be a “fan thing” and that he would if they found the right script.

"“See, I think the Punisher, and the reason why I did the short, was that it hasn’t fully been cracked in a way that fully honors the character, Frank Castle, in a film.”"

Jane is referring to an unofficial 2012 ten-minute short film in which he reprised his role as Frank Castle entitled Dirty Laundry that screened at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. He also produced it through the entertainment company he is co-running named RAW – the same company that he produces comic book titles for under its publishing division.

However, Jane also expressed interest in directing a potential film based on the character, with Jon Bernthal reprising his role from the Netflix TV series. This is what Jane had to say on the matter:

"“[I] love what Bernthal did on Netflix. I think he’s such a great Punisher. In fact, I would love to direct a Punisher starring Bernthal, because he’s such a great actor.”"

The outlet posed Jane with the question because of the the recent headlines of past Batman and Spider-Man actors returning to their respective franchises through concepts such as the multiverse and time-travel, and it seems that, given the right circumstances and if the opportunity presented itself to play Frank Castle once more, Jane would definitely be up for it. However, as he commented, it is dependent on the script and the director. Plus, tonally, it would need to be taken to a place where the character “has always wanted to go.”
