The top 10 best Marvel and DC comics of 2020
By Scott Brown
2. Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, & Cory Smith
Probably the most conventional superhero book on this list, it’s also probably the most fun series here too. Straight up, this series is just a really fun read, month in and month out, and is incredibly consistent in quality, even with a crossover. Just like with Black Widow, Kelly Thompson brings a great voice to the story and, while serious in spots, the tone is decidedly lighter than Black Widow – effectively landing a tone between that and Thompson’s also excellent Hawkeye series.
Thompson also characterizes Carol Danvers incredibly well which, sadly, is rarer than one might think it would be in the comics. However, she does so expertly and hopefully more writers stick to how she is in this series moving forward.
The art on the series has been generally very solid as well with Lee Garbett handling art duties during “The Last Avenger” arc and the current future storyline, with Cory Smith taking the reins for the “Accused” storyline. Both of their styles are similar, so there’s not a sudden, jarring visual inconsistency between story arcs, but they are different enough that you can manage to tell them apart. Really, the art in this series has just been very nice to look at, which sometimes, that’s all it needs to be.
