Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt the next Marvel Cinematic Universe star?
By Mark Lynch
According to a new rumor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt could be about to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Once upon a time, it was almost something of a taboo for a major star to be in a comic book movie. That’s changed over the last couple of decades and, even still, we’ve still had some major names make comments about how comic book films are ruining the art. Francis Ford Coppola called them despicable while Martin Scorsese doesn’t even consider Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to be real cinema. Despite that, more and more actors are flocking towards superhero flicks – especially Marvel Comics projects. Everyone wants to be part of the next big blockbuster and among those names could be The Dark Knight Rises‘ Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Murphy’s Multiverse (H/T: CBR.com) has reported a rumor that the Inception star was in talks with Marvel over the holiday weekend. Now, the article didn’t confirm what this contact actually means, suggesting that it could be something as simple as a “Happy Holidays” text between him and one of the produces or something as huge as a meeting with Kevin Fiege.
Who is Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
When rumors circulate about a star’s role in the MCU, the celebrity will either release a statement of sorts or remain coy with cryptic tweets. As we’ve yet to hear whether Joseph Gordon-Levitt is actually joining the MCU, a lot of this remains uncertain. That said, if the rumors turn out to be true and it leads to an MCU apperance, who could he play?
CBR references a rumor that he could be playing Reed Richards – which would be a smart pick considering the recent announcement of the Fantastic Four movie. There are, however, other roles in the Fantastic Four project he could play. The actor may be 39 years old, but he is capable of playing a younger character, helped by his youthful features. Maybe he could portray Johnny Storm in his late twenties. And then there are also villains. He could play Puppet Master, Mole Man, or even Doctor Doom.

There are other options as well. Maybe he’s up for a role in She-Hulk. Could he be The Leader? There are also antagonists in Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel 2. He could easily play Mahkizmo the Nuclear Man. And those are just from the recent Marvel Studios announcements. What about the X-Men? Could Marvel be making an attempt to cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt for something in the future? It would be smart to secure him in a role sooner rather than later. This way, an X-Men announcement comes with a well known and beloved actor attached to it.
In the end, this is all speculation and hopeful thinking. If Joseph Gordon-Levitt was to appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project, he’d be amazing. We’ve seen him be goofy, serious, romantic, and a very convincing action hero. There are very few roles that he can’t step in and play. Whoever he may play, he’d be a welcomed addition to the MCU.
