Harry Osborn and his father Norman Osborn both returned to the big screen in the much-maligned The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and this time they were portrayed by Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper, respectively. This version of Harry is a lot darker than the previous live-action version of the character. His resentment towards his father Norman has resulted in the shedding of most of his decent qualities and he is especially aloof towards the Oscorp board members.

An old friend of Peter, we first meet Harry when the pair reunite after being separated for ten years and Harry takes over from his late father as CEO of Oscorp. Not long after, however, he discovers that he has inherited a fictional degenerative illness known as “retroviral hyperplasia”. He desperately searches for a cure and that very much becomes the main driving force of his arc.

This version of Harry became the Green Goblin before Norman did after being refused a sample of Spider-Man’s blood – a sample that he believed could be the key to curing his disease. After subjecting himself to spider-venom removed from the destroyed genetically-modified spiders, he transformed into the psychotic Goblin and used the suit’s built-in emergency protocol to heal his declining condition.

Unfortunately, DeHaan’s portrayal of Harry and the Green Goblin was hampered in that the execution was misplaced simply because his nastier side was shoehorned in as part of “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” storyline, which saw the death of Spidey’s love interest. DeHaan initially planned to return with Cooper in the cancelled Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 films.

With Foxx’s Electro making a return in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3, an appearance from DeHaan’s Goblin would be interesting, especially if he were to come into contact with Garfield and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, his role could be undercut by Willem Dafoe’s much more beloved Green Goblin if the rumors about his return are true.
