DC Films president Walter Hamada has announced plans for two Batman franchises.

Since the announcements that both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck would be reprising their roles as their respective incarnations of Batman in Ezra Miller’s live-action The Flash movie within the DCEU, there have been a lot of rumors in relation to the future of the Batman mythos on the big screen.

How many versions of Batman is in the DCEU?

DC Films President Walter Hamada was recently interviewed by The New York Times (H/T: Movieweb) and revealed his intentions to have two Batman stories running simultaneously. Robert Pattinson will continue as The Dark Knight in The Batman saga (in what is seen to be something of an “Elseworlds” capacity outside the DC Extended Universe) while an actor will be brought in to replace Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DCEU.

The presumption is that Keaton will be his replacement. However, that could only be for the one film as the same NYT reporter Brook Barnes confirmed in a post on Twitter that we’re only talking about The Flash movie as of now. Whatever happens after that is still unconfirmed.

Therefore, assuming the forthcoming The Batman is successful and leads to Matt Reeves’ expected trilogy, expect that younger Battinson and the mysterious other Batman to co-exist on the big screen within the larger DC Multiverse – the former outside the DCEU and the latter within it. This was previously teased at DC FanDome.

Unfortunately, moviegoers and comic fans will have to wait some time to find out the result of what becomes of the Batmen as The Flash – which is expected to reset the DCEU – was delayed until Nov. 4, 2022. The film is the first live-action film based on the Scarlet Speedster and is expected to start filming at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in Hertfordshire, UK, in April 2021.

Meanwhile, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard. Matt Reeves is directing from a screenplay he has co-written with Peter Craig. Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing for 6th and Idaho Productions in association with DC Films. Warner Bros. Pictures is set to distribute. It is expected to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
