Rise of The TMNT has finally had its first plot details unveiled via Twitter.

The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, based on the series of the same name, has had its first official plot synopsis unveiled. And boy, it sounds exciting for all TMNT fans.

While the series may have seemingly ended earlier than expected with a four-part finale, the Turtles from Rise are not done yet as they are still appearing in a Netflix Original film.

The synopsis of the film is sure to get fans excited, as the reveal comes from the official TMNT twitter page and outlines a crazy plot line confirming the appearance of some fan favourite characters:

"When a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning, Leo is forced to rise & lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, & Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species…the Krang!"

Who are the villains of Rise of the TMNT?

This synopsis teases an intergalactic plot that confirms the Krang are coming to this continuity of the Heroes in a Half Shell. The Krang have had a variety of interpretations over the years, originally being introduced as the allies/enemies of the Turtles in the comics known as the Utrom. The group were also used as a major antagonist in the 2012 Nickelodeon series, with the species being named the Kraang.

However, the most classic version of the character is the Utrom named Krang in the original ’80s television series. This bumbling Utrom joined forces with the Shredder to try and defeat the Turtles and take over the Earth.

Krang was portrayed in live action for the first time in 2016 as he was the main antagonist in the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The inclusion of one of the TMNT’s most major threats makes this a big moment for the characters of the series, as they will have to muster up everything to defeat him.

It also marks Leonardo’s first mission as the leader in the series, as the Rise of the TMNT series has featured Raphael as the leader during the first two seasons, added gravitas to the mission.

As for the mystery new character appearing with a dire message, it could be anyone’s guess. The most likely option is Renet, who has been portrayed as a Timestress, apprenticed to Lord Simultaneous in the TMNT universe through most incarnations. However, fans will likely have to wait until the movie releases to find out who the character is.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is set to release on Netflix this year, with no official release date confirmed as of yet.
