Jason Aaron’s Avengers may have retconned Thor’s parents as fans of Marvel’s God of Thunder reel from the announcement.

Jason Aaron’s comic book run of Avengers has been nothing short of amazing since the very first issue. He’s had the Avengers destroy beings that kill Celestials, battle vampires, and allowed them to establish themselves as more than just a group to help America. Now, some of the Avengers and other heroes are in a tournament to see who will possess the Phoenix Force. In Avengers No. 42, however, Aaron shocked the world again. The issue ended with the Phoenix calling Thor her son.

Thor’s mother has been retconned more than a few times. It’s normally Frigga (whom we saw in the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayed by Rene Russo) but, depending on the period that you’re reading, Gaea has also been referred to as his mother. J. Michael Straczynski’s run of Thor had the God of Thunder call upon his mother Gaea’s powers to crack the ground.

Having the Odinson’s mother changed yet again does admittedly seem weird. However, this writer has learned to trust Jason Aaron’s stories.

Is the Phoenix really Thor’s mother?

Jason Aaron dropping that bomb at the end of Avengers certainly means something. He doesn’t throw things in there just for shock value. Yes, it was shocking, but a love affair between Odin and the Phoenix is something that has been hinted at since Avengers No. 1. They’ve flirted with one another, passionately kissed, and Odin even said he loves her. The fact that Phoenix might be Thor’s mother could be the unexpected conclusion to that arc… or maybe we’re being throwing us off the real truth.

More from Comics

Let’s be honest, the Phoenix Force is the villain here. Thor may not have been a threat the first time they battled (Avengers vs X-Men), but this isn’t the same Thor. This is the God of Thunder that killed Galactus. If you’re fighting a threat, you use whatever you can to your advantage. If this is a lie and it works, it could sway Thor into protecting the woman he thinks is his mother and, at least make him pause long enough for the Phoenix to counter.

This may be an unlikely option though. At the end of the issue, Thor said he felt there was some connection to him and the Phoenix Force and that he could never quite put his finger on it. Furthermore, way back in Avengers No. 4, Odin wouldn’t get into his relationship with the Phoenix.

All of the signs do seem to lead to the Phoenix being Thor’s mother – or, at the very least, being connected to him in a biologically maternal way. With gods and cosmic beings, who knows how this could happen. We’ll have to patiently wait to see if this is true or not.
