Rumor has it that one of Spidey’s most famous villains could be set to return in Spider-Man 3.

In recent weeks, A Cure for Wellness star Dane DeHaan debunked rumors that he would be reprising his role as Harry Osborn aka the Green Goblin from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s much-anticipated Spider-Man 3.

However, rumor has it that we could see a different Goblin in the film instead.

Is Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in Spider-Man 3?

According to The GWW, Willem Dafoe has been seen on the set of Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios’ third Spider-Man movie, seemingly confirming reports by The Illuminerdi that the veteran would reprise his Spider-Man (2002) role as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in the (unrelated) film Spider-Man 3.

If this in fact true and Dafoe’s Green Goblin is making a return, then he will be joining Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus in the movie. The Illuminerdi also reported that Thomas Haden Church could be bringing his Sandman back from 2007’s original Spider-Man 3.

There are still a number of rumored castings waiting to be verified including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone and Church. While Andrew Garfield is also expected to reprise his role as his own incarnation of Spider-Man from Marc Webb’s 2010s The Amazing Spider-Man saga, it will be a while before everything comes to the surface.

Dafoe was asked during an interview with CinemaBlend last year about whether he would be open to returning to this iconic role from the Sam Raimi trilogy. Not ruling it out, Dafoe commented:

"“Oh God, Norman Osborn was a really fun role to play. I don’t know about that, I don’t know what they’re doing. That was then, this is now. Who knows?”"

This writer would certainly like to see Dafoe return as the character (though he would prefer Dafoe remain Norman Osborn for the most part but still be plagued with the Goblin persona akin to what took place in the comic book storyline Dark Reign). Perhaps he could even be involved in Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds’ rumored transition into the Hobgoblin. Either way, it will be interesting to see him back.

The Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Benedict Cumberbatch but that cast could grow significantly with all the appearances seemingly lined-up. Jon Watts is directing from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing for Marvel Studios in association with Pascal Pictures. Sony Pictures Releasing is set to distribute. Spider-Man 3 will swing into theaters on Dec. 17, 2021.
