The sequel to the award-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is reportedly set to feature a rather obscure character from the comics as the main antagonist.

Sony Pictures struck gold with their multiverse-spanning animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, with the movie even winning an Oscar for best animated feature back in 2019.

The first film saw Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) take up the mantle as Spider-Man following Peter Parker’s (Chris Pine) demise at the hands of the Kingpin. Now, the follow-up film is reportedly set to feature a character with close ties to Wilson Fisk.

Who is the villain in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2?

According to Murphy’s Multiverse, an unidentified source has told the site that the Spot shall feature as the antagonist in the film. The Spot has fought both Daredevil and Spider-Man in the comics, and has appeared in both the Spider-Man ’90s animated series and the recent 2017 Spider-Man animated series.

The villain has powers similar to Cloak, as the Spot can create and manipulate portals in any place he chooses and can travel himself (or any part of his or someone else’s body) anywhere through another dimension, which is fittingly called ‘Spotworld.’

While it may seem like an odd choice to include the relatively obscure villain, his powers would fit well into the dimension-hopping aspect of the first film and could tie into the events of the previous film. His connection with the Kingpin may also serve a purpose within the storyline of the sequel.

Fans have not heard much about the sequel since its official announcement, except for images released on Twitter from the film’s official account showcasing Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 that was introduced in a post-credits scene to the original film.

The film could feature a variety of different Spider-Men or Spider-Women, with hopefully some cameos from some famous portrayals of the character and the return of several characters from the first film. The possibilities are truly endless for what Sony could do with the film.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 is set to release on April 8, 2022 and if it is anything like the first film it will be another treat for Spider-Man fans.
