Superman to return to the big screen in unexpected DCEU reboot
By Monita Mohan
It looks like Superman is set to take off on the big screen once again.
Are we seeing a resurgence of all things Superman? It certainly looks like it. The CW’s Superman & Lois premiered to acclaim earlier this week, and now Deadline reports that a certain Man of Steel is being rebooted for the big screen. It’s time for Super-fans to rejoice.
As per Deadline, they have confirmation that author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the reboot film for Warner Bros. and DC. Bad Robot, Star Wars sequel trilogy director J.J. Abrams’ the production company, is said to be producing.
The DC Extended Universe appears to be ramping up its roster of future projects and cast members. Sasha Calle has been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming The Flash film, while more HBO Max shows have been announced over the past year. Recently, it was revealed that Abrams will also be producing a ‘darker reboot’ of Constantine as well.
But this news about a new Superman film raises questions about the character in the franchise.
Don’t we already have a Superman in the DCEU?
Rumours of a new Superman film have been around for a while, especially after the failure of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was essentially a sequel to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. With Henry Cavill being pushed aside to introduce other DCEU characters, fans have been asking what’s in store for Superman.
While there’s been a lot of hope that Cavill will return to play Clark Kent/Kal-El, the announcement about this reboot appears to suggest that Cavill won’t be flying high again, especially given that Coates is attached to write the film.

Coates is a National Book Award winner and author of several books that highlight Black lives in America. He came into the spotlight for comic book fans when he wrote Marvel’s Black Panther comic series in 2016, a series that focused on the political and personal lives of the Black characters in Marvel comics.
A new era of superheroes could be making their way to our screens once The Flash introduces Flashpoint, and Coates’ writing could be the impetus that Warner Bros. and DC need to finally diversify their roster of characters, especially that of the DC Trinity.
Though Cavill himself revealed that he would be eager to return to the role, it is obvious now that he may have to hang up his cape.
No details about the plot or story about the reboot have been announced yet. But we can all expect the film to be a refreshing new look at the world of Krypton.
